I Spent Two Years Making a Chip I'd Actually Feed My Kids. Here's Why.

There's a moment every parent knows. You're standing in the snack aisle, flipping a bag over, squinting at the ingredient list. And you're doing math in your head — is this fine enough? Is "flavouring" one thing or twelve? Why does a chip need this many ingredients I can't pronounce?

I had that moment about two years ago, and I never recovered from it.

I'm Claire. I live in Singapore. I have kids who love chips — like, love chips — and I work out regularly enough to care about what I put in my own body too. For years I toggled between two bad options: give the kids something tasty that I didn't feel great about, or give them something "healthy" that ended up in the bin.

So I made a third option.

What Toro Chips actually are

Toro Chips are fish-based chips made with 70% real wild-caught tuna. Not "fish-flavoured." Not "contains fish extract." Seventy percent actual fish.

That means real DHA and EPA Omega-3 — the kind that comes from fish, not a supplement bottle. An 80g bag delivers 544mg of DHA and 17.4g of protein. Those aren't marketing numbers. They come from accredited lab testing, and we'll publish the full report when we launch.

No pork. No lard. No preservatives.

The taste? A delicate umami crunch that's genuinely hard to stop eating. I know every founder says that about their product. You'll have to try it and decide for yourself — that's why we made the 20g taster bag.

Why it took this long

I could have launched faster with a lower fish ratio. Plenty of "fish chips" on the market use 10–20% actual fish and fill the rest with starch and flavouring. We went with 70% because I didn't want to build a brand around a technicality.

Getting the texture right at that fish ratio took time. Finding a manufacturing partner who could do it at scale — VB Snack Company in Thailand, who've been brilliant — took more time. Getting the nutrition independently lab-tested took even more.

I'm not complaining. It just means that when I hand you a bag of Toro Chips, I'm handing you something I actually spent two years pressure-testing. Not a rebrand of someone else's formula.

Who this is for

I built Toro Chips for people like me — which turns out to be a lot of people:

Parents who want a snack they don't have to feel conflicted about. Each 20g serving has 136mg DHA and 20mg EPA from real fish. Pork-free, no preservatives. Something the whole family can share without separate "kids" and "adults" versions.

The honest bits

A few things I want to say upfront, because I'd want to know them if I were you:

We haven't shipped a single bag yet. Every number on our site — protein, DHA, Omega-3 — is lab-verified. But no one has bought or reviewed Toro Chips because they don't exist in stores yet. Any review you see before August 2026 isn't from us.

We use MSG. It's in the ingredient list, and we're not hiding it. Monosodium glutamate has been studied extensively and is used in kitchens worldwide. We'd rather list it clearly than bury it under "seasoning" or "natural flavouring" like some brands do.

We're not Halal-certified yet. Our product contains no pork and no lard — that's factually true. But we haven't received MUIS certification, so we won't claim Halal status until we do. That process is underway.

I think honesty makes better brands than spin does. You might disagree. Either way, you know exactly what you're getting.
